Ian Harlum

Principal Consultant

Ian is a highly experienced executive and ICT strategist with a record of achievement in the leadership, management and delivery of business, technological, and organisational initiatives in both government and the private sector.

Ian possesses a unique mix of leadership, management and operational expertise, achieving complex technical, delivery and organisational outcomes for both client and business alike. He is particularly regarded for his ability to work with people, combine strategic thinking, insight in business and technology trends and pragmatic implementation principles to ensure a program delivers the right balance of innovative and achievable outcomes.  He thrives on working with and facilitating others to solve complex business problems.

Ian has a long record of delivering diverse technology-based solutions; however, it is his ability to deliver to expectation whilst leading diverse teams in complex organisations, whilst leaving an improved way of business that has seen him stand above others.

Ian has held senior roles with large multi-national technology organisations as well as small Australian technology and consulting businesses. In addition to his content expertise, he also understands the cultural, commercial and business drivers underpinning government and has used this knowledge to shape and forge positive outcomes for the Commonwealth in many occasions.

Ian has a record of achievements in technology implementation including project & program management, technical, operations, consulting, general and business management roles in the provision of complex information technology and telecommunications services. Clients have acknowledged the coaching, leadership and direction he has provided in the delivery of their business and technology transformation programs.

Ian’s philosophy is that while the role of the consultant is to bring leading approaches, techniques and knowledge, the solution will not be successful unless it is co-designed with the client.  Whilst he employs a range of approaches to create solutions to complex business problems, often in short and demanding timeframes, his success often comes from starting a journey with an agreed initial strategy with regular check-points, avoiding “analysis paralysis” that often becomes a significant reason for failure in business and ICT strategy programs.
